Privacy Policy
Japanese Sentence Card ("the app") is a flashcard app for studying Japanese sentences. This page explains what information the app collects, why, and how you can remove it.
What we collect
- Account information: the email address and password you sign up with, plus an optional display name and profile photo if you choose to add them. Passwords are handled entirely by our authentication provider (Supabase) and are never visible to us in plain text.
- Your cards: the Japanese sentences, translations, and tags you create, plus romaji, furigana, and kana readings, which are generated automatically (not typed in) to help with study and pronunciation.
- Voice recordings: if you choose to record your own pronunciation for a card, that audio is stored as part of that card's data.
- Study activity: review history and statistics (such as streaks and cards reviewed) used to power spaced-repetition scheduling and the activity view.
- Shared community content: if you choose to share a tag, its name, description, back-card language, and the sentences/translations in it (never your voice recordings) become visible to other signed-in users, along with your display name and how many people downloaded it.
- Downloads and reports: which shared tags you've downloaded, and any report you submit about a tag (the reason and any detail you add) are recorded to operate downloads and community moderation.
- Subscription status: whether your account is on the Free or Premium plan, and the renewal/expiration date of an active subscription. This comes from Apple and our subscription-management provider, RevenueCat — described below.
We do not collect location data, contacts, or any information beyond what's listed above. The app contains no advertising and no third-party analytics or tracking SDKs.
How it's used
Your information is used solely to operate the app for you: authenticating your account, syncing your cards and study history across your devices, generating romaji for sentences you enter (processed through our own backend function, not a third party), determining whether Premium features are unlocked, and the Community feature for sharing and downloading tags between users, including reviewing reports to keep shared content appropriate.
Subscriptions and payments
Premium is sold as an auto-renewing subscription through Apple's App Store. All payment is handled entirely by Apple — we never see, receive, or store your card number or any other payment details. To manage your subscription status, we use RevenueCat, which receives your purchase/subscription information from Apple (such as which plan you bought and its renewal status) and a device/account identifier needed to look it up, and reports back to us only whether your subscription is currently active. See RevenueCat's privacy policy for how they handle that data.
Where it's stored
Data is stored with our infrastructure providers, Supabase (database and authentication) and Vercel (hosting), plus RevenueCat for subscription status as described above. Row-level security ensures your private data — cards you haven't shared, recordings, account details — is only ever accessible to your own account. We do not sell your data or share it with advertisers or other third parties outside the app. The only data other app users can see is what you explicitly choose to share through the Community feature, described above.
Your control over your data
You can permanently delete your account at any time from within the app (Profile → Delete account). This immediately and permanently removes your account and all associated data — cards, tags, recordings, and review history — and cannot be undone. Deleting your account does not cancel an active Premium subscription, since that's managed by Apple, not us — cancel it separately via your device's Settings → Subscriptions, or the "Manage or cancel subscription" link on the Membership screen, to stop future billing.
You can unshare a tag at any time from My tags, which removes it from the community feed. Anyone who already downloaded a copy before then keeps that copy, since it was already saved into their own collection — unsharing (or deleting your account) doesn't reach into other users' devices.
Children's privacy
The app is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
